The Master of English Education Study Program held a Coaching Academic Writing for Thesis event themed “Critical Writing Style” with Maslathif Dwi Purnomo, Ph.D., an expert in the field of academic writing and critical research. The event, which took place on June 19, 2024, aims to equip students with thesis writing skills that are critical, analytical, and in accordance with international academic standards.
In the session, Dr. Maslathif thoroughly discussed various techniques in writing a thesis that is oriented towards critical analysis, ranging from thesis structure, argument development, to accurate citation techniques. He emphasized the importance of having a critical approach in academic writing, where students are expected to be able to express in-depth and data-based opinions, as well as analyze relevant issues in their research topics.
Dr. Maslathif also shared tips on avoiding common mistakes in academic writing, such as the use of ambiguous sentences, errors in referencing, and the organization of ideas that lack cohesiveness. He emphasized that critical writing is not only about providing critical views, but also about crafting logical arguments supported by strong scientific evidence.
The session ended with a short workshop, where students were given the opportunity to review their thesis paragraphs and get feedback directly from Dr. Maslathif. The participants were very enthusiastic in this discussion, discussing techniques to improve the quality of their academic writing, as well as obtaining practical guidelines for composing a high-standard thesis.
The Chairperson of the Master of English Education Study Program expressed her high appreciation to Dr. Maslathif for his contribution in helping students prepare themselves to compose a critical and quality thesis. This event is expected to improve students’ academic competence, especially in writing scientific papers that can contribute to the development of science at the national and international levels.
